A Little Rant

It's interesting the patterns and phenomena we tend to see when we take a step back from the canvas of our own lives and begin to look at our own lives objectively.  I have spent countless hours looking after friends, giving rides, sitting in the Emergency Room, texting, and whatever else my "friends" have needed.  I have spent that time out of some belief that was what a friend was supposed to do.  It's funny though.  I have noticed that when I need something, when my day is bad and I reach out to them for help none of them ever have the time to help me.  A friend once told me she thought I was "nice to a fault."  She said that I had spent so much time putting others before myself that I had never really taken the time to focus on the things I needed.

Well I have come to a conclusion.  I am tired of one sided friendships.  I am tired of people sucking on me and never giving anything back.  I am tired of "friends" who only seem to call when they need a ride somewhere or need someone to coddle them after some problem with some relationship or whatever it may be.  From now on, unless I believe you would willingly help me whenever I needed it, I don't want you as a friend.  I don't want people as friends who are only friends when it's convenient but rather through hard times and easy times.  I know that I'm a temperamental person and sometimes that's a difficult thing, but that's why I appreciate the people who have done it for so many months or in some cases years.  If you read this and you don't think I mean you, you're probably right, because the few people I do mean know who they are.

Happy Thoughts

So a friend of mine just posted this same thing, inspiring me to finally create a blog.  I figured I would start off my blog by sharing what makes me happy.  Since my birthday is next week, and I will be 23, here are 23 things that make me happy.

1. Friends. Most of my friends know that they are so important to me.  Without them, I don't know where I would be.  And by that, I mean real friends, like the ones who are there when you need them even when they have somewhere else to be.

2. Football. My friends also know this is something I could never live without.  I love the game of football more than anything.

3. My family. Both my parents and sister and my cousins are awesome.  They are such a great support.

4. The Gospel. Even when I'm not the best at doing everything right, I have the blessing of knowing that I have a Savior who loves me despite my flaws.

5. Running. I'm not very fast, but running always seems to clear my head when I need it.

6. Playing guitar. On those really stressful days, playing guitar is always a great release.

7. Singing. The greatest way I know to express myself is through my voice.  It doesn't hurt that I'm not bad at it either.

8. Helping others. You will find no greater joy than in the service of friends.  Whether it's 3 AM trips to the ER or the airport or just hanging out with someone who is having a bad day, that is what makes our world great.

9. Roommates. I basically have the best ones ever.

10. Naps. Always the best part of any day.

11. Free T-Shirts. I have a ton of them, and I can't tell you how awesome that is, even if they are 3 sizes to big.

12. Work. Whether it's my job or household work, I love the feeling of accomplishment you get from doing a solid day's work.

13. Good food. There is only so much ramen and fast food a college kid can eat so getting to take trips to nice places, like Tucanos, is awesome.

14. Pizza. It doesn't qualify as a trip to a nice place, but oh how I love great pizza.

15. Guy's Night. Laugh all you want, but this is something that we used to do back home in St. Louis, and I loved it every time.  Girls get to do it, why can't we.

16. Road trips. No matter who it's with, getting to see the country is awesome.

17. Texas. I served my mission in San Antonio and Austin, Texas areas.  I love the people, the food, and the football.  Hook 'Em Horns.

18. St. Louis Cardinals. World Series Champs in 2011 for the 11th time. My favorite sports team of all time.

19. St. Louis, MO. Most dangerous city in the USA, 3rd most dangerous in the world, and I am proud to call it home.

20. Monday Night Movie Night. We do this every week, and it is so much fun.  75 cents to see a move in a theater.  Who cares if the movie's been out for 4 months.  Yes please.

21. Delivering love notes. In our ward here in Utah, we write love notes every Sunday night, and then me and a few other guys go and deliver those and sing and it is always the highlight of my week.

22. Acting. It gives you a chance to be someone you aren't and step in to a world that doesn't exist.  It is such an amazing feeling when you become someone.  It stretches you and it is just amazing.

23. Learning. I'm not a huge fan of homework, but I love school.  Being able to learn and expand your mind and intellect is awesome.

There are about 1000 other things I could have put here, but this is what came to mind.  Spend some time making a list of your own.  You'll be surprised how awesome it makes you feel.
